The name “Accra” originates from the Akan language, spoken by southern Ghanaian inhabitants. Ghana declared independence from Britain in 1957. Toward the end of the 19th century, the English gained control of the region and named Accra their capital. Accra also lies just south of the 3,000-square-mile Lake Volta, one of the world’s largest man-made lakes.Įuropeans began to settle Ghana in 1482, and Accra became a major trade city for the Danish, Dutch and English, with gold in abundance. It is found toward the center of the country’s lone southern coast, which runs along the Gulf of Guinea in the Atlantic Ocean. ACCRA is Ghana’s capital and largest city, with nearly 2.5 million residents.
